In accordance with Australian Standard 2589

• Recess edge joints shall have:-

  1/ a total joint width of no less than 250 mm and not be hollow.

  2/ a joint which is not overbuilt, meaning the joint build is no more than 2 mm above the surface and over the width of the joint and the profile of the joint shall not exhibit a distinct peak or ridge at the centre, that means, the joint shall have an even convex profile over its full width

• Butt joints shall have:-

  1/ a total joint width of no less than 250 mm for back-blocked butt joints formed centrally between framing members to form a recess for jointing; or no less than 500 mm for butt joints formed on framing.

  2/ a joint that is not overbuilt, meaning the joint build-up is no more than 2 mm above the surface and over the width of the joint and the profile of the joint does not exhibit a distinct peak or ridge at the centre and the joint has an even convex profile over its full width.

• External angles shall have:-

  1/ a total joint width of no less than 250 mm either side of the corner which is not overbuilt, meaning, the joint build-up is no more than 3 mm above the surface and over the width of the joint;

  2/ sufficient jointing cement or compound applied to provide a gentle taper to the metal angle and the back edges feathered so as not to show an uneven line

• Internal corners shall have:-

  1/ a straight corner;

  2/ a total joint width of not less than 75 mm either side of the corner which is not overbuilt, that is, the joint build-up at the corner shall be no greater than 2 mm above the paper surface and over the width of the joint;

  3/ sufficient jointing cement/jointing compound applied to provide a gentle taper from the corner to the surface of the gypsum and feathered on the back edge as not to show an eneven line.
